Heat is the #1 Danger for Outdoor Pets
Warm weather adventures with your dog or cat can be incredible — but heat is a serious and often underestimated risk. Unlike humans, pets can't sweat efficiently, making them far more vulnerable to overheating. Here's how to keep your furry companion safe when temperatures rise.
Know the Signs of Heatstroke
Heatstroke can develop quickly and become life-threatening. Watch for these warning signs:
- Excessive panting or drooling
- Bright red or pale gums
- Lethargy or weakness
- Vomiting or diarrhea
- Loss of coordination or collapse
If you notice any of these, move your pet to shade immediately, apply cool (not cold) water to their body, and seek veterinary care as soon as possible.
Plan Your Hike Around the Heat
The simplest way to avoid heat-related issues is to hike during cooler parts of the day. Early morning (before 9am) and late evening (after 6pm) are ideal in summer. Avoid midday hikes when the sun and ground temperatures are at their peak.
Check the Ground Temperature
Hot pavement and rocky surfaces can burn your pet's paw pads in seconds. A simple test: place the back of your hand on the surface for 5 seconds. If it's too hot for your hand, it's too hot for their paws. Use paw wax or boots for protection.
Hydration is Everything
Bring more water than you think you'll need — for both of you. Offer your pet water every 15–20 minutes on hot days, even if they don't seem thirsty. Collapsible bowls make this easy on the trail.
Create Shade and Rest Breaks
Don't push through without breaks. Find shaded spots to rest every 30–45 minutes. A cooling mat or wet bandana around your pet's neck can help lower their body temperature during breaks.
Consider a Cooling Vest
Cooling vests work by evaporation — wet them, wring them out, and put them on your dog. They can lower body temperature significantly and are a great investment for summer hiking.
Know Your Pet's Limits
Brachycephalic breeds (flat-faced dogs like Bulldogs, Pugs, and French Bulldogs) and senior pets are especially vulnerable to heat. Shorten hikes and increase rest breaks for these animals, or save outdoor adventures for cooler seasons.
